The meaning of the beautiful 99th verse in the “Daya Satakam” of Swami vedanta Desikan is so well explained here in this video clip using the “Kovil yaanai… “ — the temple elephant … as an illustrative metaphor for the nature of jivaatma, the individual soul:

த்³ருʼஷ்டேঽபி து³ர்ப³லதி⁴யம் த³மநேঽபி த்³ருʼப்தம்
ஸ்நாத்வாঽபி தூ⁴லிரஸிகம் ப⁴ஜநேঽபி பீ⁴மம் ।
ப³த்³த்⁴வா க்³ருʼஹாண வ்ருʼஷஶைலபதேர்த³யே மாம்
த்வத்³வாரணம் ஸ்வயமநுக்³ரஹஶ்ருʼங்க²லாபி:⁴ ॥ 99 ॥

drste’pi durbaladhiyam damane’pi drptam
snatva’pi dhulirasikam bhajane’pi bhimam ।
baddhva grhana vrsasailapaterdaye mam
tvadvaranam svayamanugrahasrnkhalabhih ॥
