The labyrinth called the Indian Criminal Justice system

A very useful Infograph below was forwarded to me on WhatsApp this morning by a friend of mine, a very distinguished and former Judge of the High Court. Thank you so much Sir for sharing it with me.

The graphic lays out the whole legal labyrinth through which the Indian Legal system works from start to finish in the Courts, Police and Investigative systems of India today — i.e. from the time a complaint is made by a citizen to the the time an FIR is filed all the way through to the end when a Court issues a verdict.

I thanked the Judge for sharing the above graphic and asked him if it would not have been even more useful if the chart had also been plotted upon a timeline to show how long it takes on an average in our country for an FIR to finally end up in a court conviction or dismissal. He was honest enough to admit that no such timeframe could possibly be given since “there were too many variables at play”.

Now, that terse phrase of his to me seemed truly to be a tell-all reflection of the sclerotic judicial system in India: It was designed, nay, tailor made in the first place to indefinitely delay justice as long as possible so as to degrade it in the end, even if not entirely to deny it.
