In a conflict between King and Sage, to whom should the subject defer more?: Somber Tirukkural thoughts

In the ongoing tussle between the Rulers and the Sankaracharyas, not to mention other Sadhus at the Ayodhya temple , one wonders to which of the following 2 Tirukkural couplets should a humble and loyal subject of the land lend greater credence and deference :

Kural 895 :

A person who incurs the wrath of a mighty ruler will not survive wherever he might go.

Kural 900:

Even mighty kings with vast army and sufficient aides will perish if they incur the wrath of the sages.

  1. We are a democracy…we are not ruled but governed. So there is no ruler. So the first kural you have mentioned above cannot apply.
