The Supreme Court of India and a “casteless society”

How many more “seminal issues of Constitution”, one wonders , will the Chief Justices of our Supreme Court have to deliberate and adjudicate upon before we see the last of this whole business of Reservations and Quotas ?

This country has had 75 long years to progress to what it dreamed would be an egalitarian “Casteless society” ushered in … Are we anywhere close to that pipe dream all the great wisemen who wrote the Constitution (our so-called “holy book” today!” ) — conjured it up for “We the People”?

The list of Constitutional “seminal issues” to be resolved by the Justices only seems to keep growing year after year, not diminishing . Meanwhile, their Lordships seem to be blissfully indifferent to the fact that their expert ministrations do nothing at all really to bring about a casteless society … instead they are only continuing to help perpetuate the ills and inequities of Casteism even longer and in its ever newer avatars.

The Judiciary in India was expected to be the surgeon who would come in and use the scalpel of law to skilfully remove the cancer of Casteism in India. Instead, it has ended up becoming a midwife assisting rebirths of the deadly disease in its various new mutations … this new “sub-classification of OBCs and SC/STs” being, in fact, the very latest.

O tempora ! O mores !
