🏏 🏏 This morning on WhatsApp someone forwarded me this message below ⬇️ which momentarily truly stunned me:
Total Matches : 84
Balls Per Match :
240 (not counting extras)
Total Broadcast Rights : ₹ 48,390 Cr
Total Balls Bowled : 84 × 240=
20160
Each Ball Bowled is worth Rupees
2.4 Cr.
Think of it !! It’s astounding, isn’t it? Statistics is mind boggling indeed.

Now , that made me mentally do another kind of quick calculation.
1. No. of hungry, undernourished , malnourished people in India: 194 million. (Please scroll right down below to the Postscript for details)
2. Let’s say ₹.20,160 (i.e. taking total no. of IPL balls bowled and converting it into ₹.1 per ball ) gets spent on 194 million undernourished/ hungry population everyday throughout the IPL tournament . How much would that aggregate to ? If my arithmetic is correct : ₹. 3.88 million only ( i.e. 194 mn X ₹. 0.02 mn)
3. We all know that the IPL organisers for every 100 runs scored in a match by a team, announce 100 cricketing kits to be distributed to club-level cricketers all around the country’s cricketing associations . Good 👍 That’s an excellent idea. I applaud it.
4. Similarly, however, why can’t the IPL also announce donations of ₹. 3.88 million /match to the Govt of India’s social welfare program to feed the hungry, malnourished 194 million people in our country ? That would work out to just ₹.3.88 mn X 84 = ₹.326 million only .
Cricket in India gets so much indeed from its cricket-crazy populations . Why can’t cricket, cricketers and the cricket establishment give something back to India’s people too as “ IPL annadaanam”? Why can’t a little of wild nationwide cricket-frenzy be turned into a bit of generous “annadaata” too?
This is my humble appeal to Sri Jay Shah of the BCCI .
BTW, we must all know that BCCI enjoys IT exemption !

PS:
NUTRITION STATISTICS OF INDIA
In India, a staggering number of people struggle with hunger. According to various reports, approximately 189 million people were already undernourished before the COVID-19 pandemic began ¹. This translates to about 14.5% of the Indian population falling under the undernourished category ².
To break it down further, here are some alarming statistics:
- 194 million people in India survive under the shackles of undernourishment ².
- 38% of children below the age of five are stunted, and 36% are underweight ².
- 51.4% of women between the ages of 15 and 49 are anemic ².
- 8.8 lakh children under the age of five lost their lives due to starvation in 2018 ².
These numbers are a stark reminder of the widespread hunger and malnutrition issues plaguing India.
TBH – this is an amazingly powerful idea !!!
Just think of the overall impact – both real & the PR of it….
And not to speak of the cascade effects it would have on other such events/ matches that garner crores in revenue.
