Veda exponent, excellent orator, Mukkur Sri Lakshmi Narasimha Chariar (1944–2001) strictly adhered to Sri Vaishnava traditions and lived a simple life like a sage. Affectionately called ‘Mukkur Swami’ by everyone, he is revered as a person with deep knowledge and profound travel experiences in Veda Shastras and traditions. During his lifetime, he delivered thousands of rare and excellent discourses and also conducted 108 Maha Narasimha Yajnas across the country.
Avoiding thousands of participants seeking personal interactions and advertisements, Swami traveled all over the country entirely at his own expense. Through conducting Yajnas and delivering discourses, he fully dedicated himself to the service of spreading the Sri Vaishnava tradition.
He explained the Vedas, Upanishads, Itihasas, Puranas, Divya Prabandhams, and Sri Bhashyam in an extremely simple and beautiful language filled with humor. His voice, recorded during the 44th Jeeyar of Sri Ahobila Mutt’s period, still echoes today in the prayer rooms of countless households. Due to requests from devotees, a compilation titled ‘Kurai Ondrum Illai’ (No Deficiencies) was brought out in multi-volume books, introducing him to the next generation.
While there are many articles, speeches, and updates available online regarding Swami’s life, there has been a lack of a comprehensive book documenting his life history. Specifically, there has been no book in English about his life history. The biographies of great teachers (Acharyas) like Srimad Ramanuja and Vedanta Desika are well-documented. However, the life history of Mukkur Swami as a modern-day Acharya has remained poorly recorded in history books.
To fulfill this gap, M.K. Sudarshan, a disciple of Mukkur Swami, has published an English book titled ‘Yajnesa – The Life and Times of “Mukkur” Sri Lakshmi Narasimha Chariar.’
On the occasion of the birth centenary of his father M.Krishnaswami, he has spent a lot of time collecting details about the life of Acharya Mukkur Lakshmi Narasimha Chariar to bring out this historical biography book.
By profession a Chartered Accountant and corporate financial advisor, M.K. Sudarshan is retired and is today engaged in writing, research, and deeply exploring Indian philosophy, theology, and social history. This book is highly useful for seekers, researchers, and spiritual enthusiasts who wish to understand the Sri Vaishnava tradition. It serves as an excellent guide for Tamils living in Delhi, Chennai, and other places.
The book beautifully explains the remarkable life incidents of the Acharya, his Veda Abhyasam (studies), his higher education at the Maduranthakam Sanskrit College (1944–1962), his years in Vijayawada (1962–1971), his years of delivering discourses (1971–1984), and his final years (1982–2001). It covers how Swami conducted every Yajna, the arrangements made, the renovation works supervised at the Mattapalli Narasimha Temple, and more. Furthermore, it incorporates the details of the lineage of Mukkur Swami, the path taught by him to the devotees, and the holy feet of the Swami.
In this modern age when tradition is fading due to negligence and distraction, this book acts as a bridge to preserve it for the next generation. The author in his other published works has also extensively researched and detailed the historic dispute that arose between the two sects of Sri Vaishnavism during earlier historical periods (“A Tale of Two Cities- The Decline and Fall of the “ubaya-Vedantins””) . M.K. Sudarshan’s historical review has been widely appreciated. The book is centered primarily around Sri Vaishnava theology and tradition.
This book serves indeed as a historical record of the 108 Yajnas performed by Sri Mukkur Swami. It includes extraordinary chapters written in the spirit of a true Sri Vaishnava devotee. The descriptions are excellent, and the language is truly high-quality. The author shines as a writer with a capability to explain complex scriptural concepts, social issues, and histories in a simple and analytical manner.
