A word of advice from an ordinary citizen of Tamil Nadu to the new Chief Minister, Thiru. M K Stalin

Hon’ble Chief Minister Sir , Thiru M K Stalin,

Sir, You are newly elected ! You are still flushed from the victory you scored in the State Elections earlier this month! I am sure you are going to be feeling you’re on cloud 9 for a bit while more.

While your euphoria lasts, Sir, please do take the opportunity to make bold, brave and creative departures from the run-of-the-mill tasks and chores of your office, governance and administration. Please try out some out-of-the-box ideas and try to bring a whole new fresh approach to how you wish to be remembered 5 years from now as a Chief Minister.

Your political track-record in Tamil Nadu you have often claimed truly shines … and why? … because of the good work you did as one-time Mayor of Chennai and as erstwhile Minister of Public Works . You are never tired of claiming that you did much to improve and modernise the civil infrastructure of both Chennai City (to make it “singaara chennai”) as well that of the entire state to put Tamil Nadu on the top ranks of states in the country with good-quality public civil infrastructure — like roads, bridges, fly-overs, drainage-systems, dams, reservoirs etc.

But Sir, that was all more than 10 long years ago … You cannot expect we ordinary citizens to laud you for your past achievements or laurels. But then Sir we the citizens are happy to give you again a great opportunity now in the next 5 years to prove that your past track record as the “infrastructure man” of Tamil Nadu will continue to blaze forth into the future too.

No one in the State — at least certainly no ordinary citizen like me — has any clue today as to what really is the state and condition of the many civil infrastructure and assets that Tamil Nadu owns and maintains. There is no visibility … no updated public dashboard, no info-graphs, no easy-to-read report other than what gets provided in dense and foggy Annual State Budget presentations— for the general public today to see how efficiently the Government PWD (Public Works Dept) has been all these years or decades in creating, maintaining and modernising the civil infrastructure of the State.

Why? Because there just isn’t any simple and meaningful quantitative measure or index by which one can assess the true condition of public civil-construction assets of the State.

For example, Sir, does anyone know the average age of bridges, flyovers, drainage in all the Class A and B cities of Tamil Nadu ?

Would you be able to get your PWD Dept. to submit to you a comprehensive White Paper on the present ageing status of all major State civil -infrastructure… in exactly the simple manner in which, say, the attached info-graphic above describes clearly the present age of the old and creaking infrastructure of the USA ?

Sir, I for one, as an ordinary citizen who pays his taxes regularly to the government , and who knows it’s from that pool of money collected as tax that all the PWD work got actually accomplished to build roads and bridges and drainage etc. … Sir, do I not have a right to know how long ago they were all constructed and what exactly is their condition today ?

Take a look for a moment at the above chart.

It shows that the USA —- the wealthiest country in the world — has public-works assets whose average is now 50 years ! In other words America’s public civil-structures are half-a-century old … i.e. today’s GenX and GenZ generations of America are using the same roads, bridges and overpasses which their grandfathers had built for themselves two generations ago ! That’s how old and dilapidated America’s public civil-construction assets are today !

If your IAS officers in your government today were to provide you with a simple graphic much like the above to reveal to you the comparable ageing of all Tamil Nadu’s “bricks-and-mortar” assets, I as an ordinary citizen of the State that you now will be governing in the ensuing 5 years, I do really wonder how it might look like!

Sir, even if you as Chief Minister, have no time to engage like me in such idle wondering, I ask you in all earnestness, wouldn’t you be curious at least to know what is the age of the iconic Gemini Flyover in Chennai City that was built during the time of your late, departed father who was Chief Minister too then?

Chief Minister Sir, let me remind you that the Gemini Flyover’s age today is the same as the average age of civil infrastructure in all of America! Fifty long years … half a century almost!

Now, as a Tamilian I don’t think of that as a matter to be proud of in any way…

Sir, do you? Will you be proud… after 5 years?

Yours Truly,

THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN AN INDIAN OPPOSITION PARTY AND AN ISRAELI OPPOSITION PARTY IS … Real Patriotism!

Jai Hind 🇮🇳

👆🏿👆🏿 …. How I wish all Opposition Parties in India talk like this Israeli politician does on an international TV news channel that both he and we know only too well is biased and anti-Israeli .

In India , not a single Opposition Party leader will have the guts to speak like this about PM Modi on BBC, CNN or Al Jazeera … for fear of being expelled immediately from the Party by the “Party High Command” or the “Politburo” for anti-Party activity which is really more serious offence in their dictionary than any anti-patriotic activity.

What a pity in India, Patriotism gets to be defined half by pseudo-secularists and half by pseudo-patriots… or more fully described in Party “Tool-Kits” meant for use by Party cadre and propagandists .. 😔

“DAYA SATAKAM”: Verse 99…. A real beauty !

The meaning of the beautiful 99th verse in the “Daya Satakam” of Swami vedanta Desikan is so well explained here in this video clip using the “Kovil yaanai… “ — the temple elephant … as an illustrative metaphor for the nature of jivaatma, the individual soul:

“The old order changeth, yielding place to new…”

Then loudly cried the bold Sir Bedivere:

“Ah! my Lord Arthur, whither shall I go?
Where shall I hide my forehead and my eyes?
For now I see the true old times are dead,
When every morning brought a noble chance,
And every chance brought out a noble knight.
Such times have been not since the light that led
The holy Elders with the gift of myrrh.

But now the whole ROUND TABLE is dissolved
Which was an image of the mighty world;
And I, the last, go forth companionless,
And the days darken round me, and the years,
Among new men, strange faces, other minds.”

And slowly answer’d Arthur from the barge:

“The old order changeth, yielding place to new,
And God fulfils Himself in many ways,
Lest one good custom should corrupt the world.
Comfort thyself: what comfort is in me?
I have lived my life, and that which I have done
May He within Himself make pure! but thou,

If thou shouldst never see my face again,
Pray for my soul. More things are wrought by prayer
Than this world dreams of.

Wherefore, let thy voice
Rise like a fountain for me night and day.
For what are men better than sheep or goats
That nourish a blind life within the brain,
If, knowing God, they lift not hands of prayer
Both for themselves and those who call them friend?
For so the whole round earth is every way
Bound by gold chains about the feet of God.

But now farewell. I am going a long way
With these thou seëst—if indeed I go—
(For all my mind is clouded with a doubt)
To the island-valley of Avilion;
Where falls not hail, or rain, or any snow,
Nor ever wind blows loudly; but it lies
Deep-meadow’d, happy, fair with orchard-lawns
And bowery hollows crown’d with summer sea,
Where I will heal me of my grievous wound.”

So said he, and the barge with oar and sail
Moved from the brink, like some full-breasted swan
That, fluting a wild carol ere her death,
Ruffles her pure cold plume, and takes the flood
With swarthy webs.

Long stood Sir Bedivere
Revolving many memories, till the hull
Look’d one black dot against the verge of dawn,
And on the mere the wailing died away.

PAAPAMMAAL AND MY OWN FARMLAND MEMORIES!

https://fb.watch/5wSr3y1LFb/

Watching this video clip below … about this year’s Padma Shree awardee, Paapammaal of Tamil Nadu, brought back to me a few memories of my own maternal grandfather C. Lakshminarasimhachariar in his village of Kangayenellore (near Katpadi) where he lived and worked all his life tilling his considerable farmland ancestral holdings… He was a indeed a “son of the soil” in the true and best sense of the phrase …

Being the successful farmer that he certainly was in life it was not as though he did not face difficult challenges and hardships of his occupation in that tiny village … Yet it was as a hardworking farmer that he chose to define himself in life and found fulfilment in it.

He raised a large family of a dozen children. To every single one of whom he strived to give the best start in life in terms of modern education , best health care, timely marriage and finally, a handsome inheritance too that he left behind for them.

His legions of grandchildren (they today number more than 2 dozens belonging to all classes of generations : baby boomer, millennial, genX and genY and live as part of the Indian diaspora across the globe ( in the US, W.Africa and New Zealand ) .. they too have received in good measure, whether directly or indirectly, the many benefactions of his farm in Kangeyanellore.

I am the eldest of all his grandchildren and today as I look back and remember his life’s work — and his farm — I realise how generously they both had provided me in my own life the priceless blessings and bounty of food and salt — good nutrition and robust health ! I tell myself now that I too qualify in a sort of way to be called a “son of the soil” of Kaangeyanellore … but not in the same sense as my grandfather was … for, while he worked and toiled tirelessly all his life on that land by the “sweat of his brow” I, on the other hand , was fortunate to merely eat off it … and for which I know I must remain grateful and indebted all my life .

Watching this video clip of old Paapammaal I can’t help my blind admiration for this lady of 105 years! She reminds me of the same dour , rugged and indomitable farming spirit that my own grandfather possessed.

If my grandfather had been alive today … he too would have been at least 103 or 104 years old … ! And I’m sure he would still have remained in Kangeyanellore and continued to plough his lonely furrow , tending to his cattle and still producing enough crops and food from out of the same patch of soil with which he had raised 3 or 4 generations of his large happy global progeny …

My grandfather is long gone today … he died in 1979 .. and almost all of his farmlands have vanished too … sold away slowly bit by bit over the years … His farm today is a pale ghost of its old self .

But I guess the spirit of C.Lakshminarasimhachariar still probably sometimes lingers in and around the farming vicinities of what once was his old village-farm that has however itself undergone so many changes and transformations, it is unrecognisable today.

That spirit of his probably still meanders around through what once were his vast farmholdings … much like the way I now see in this video grand old lady Pappamal doing in her very own lands …

And who knows … probably my grandfather is wistfully whispering to himself :

With them the Seed of Wisdom did I sow,
With mine own hands wrought to make it grow ;
This was all the Harvest that I reaped
I came like Water , like Wind I go … “

PRIDE IS THE CAUSE OF HATE… NOT THE OTHER WAY ROUND.

Looking at the above map and reading its caption, anyone who is not so well acquainted with the history of the Arab peoples and of the Muslim-Jew conflict in the MENA region, might wonder why the vast majority of Arabs who indeed have so much vast swathes of geography and country at their collective disposal cannot get together and give away a tiny slice or sliver of land carved out of it from somewhere within and gift it away to the Palestinians so they can call it their own country . … and make lasting peace finally with the Israelites and the rest of the world ?!

Wouldn’t such a humanitarian gesture solve the Palestinian problem for good? It’s a nice thought, yes, but then it’s so very wishful too …

The sad but ineluctable fact of the matter is that it’s very difficult for the great majority of a region’s peoples to be accommodative and voluntarily give up even a piece of the real-estate they have come to hold as sacred in favour of a minority competing for the same property. Giving up even “an inch of land” under the circumstances for both sides then becomes inconceivable. It amounts to no less than heinous treason, to treachery and betrayal of the interests and honour of the majority population…. And all of that high fervent feeling then somehow gets inevitably whipped up and whipped into a heady but deadly cocktail of fermented religious passion too.

It is really not so much Hate but some atavistic notion of collective Pride of the people that makes both sides remain antagonistic to each other for centuries if not millennia..

The pathological attachment to holy real-estate that people suffer from gets conveniently labelled as “religious sentiment” by every one when, in fact, the religions per se have nothing to do with it.

Throughout the history of mankind we have seen this so-called “religious sentiment” infect people like some unseen deadly virus — unseen, pandemic and uneradicable… so much like Covid today … one might say! … and, yes of course, mankind is yet to discover a vaccine for it!

In the great Hindu epics, the theme of bitter and bloody battling for real-estate is always the constant leitmotif.

In the Ramayana, the story is about how 2 half-brothers in a great dynasty got dragged into a battle for claim of real-estate heirloom … the throne of Ayodhya .

In the Mahabharata, brothers went to war since one of them would never concede even 5 small villages to the other to own and enjoy.

In the Ayodhya of today, we saw too how India’s majority Hindus, owning and holding almost 85% of country’s total real-estate of 812.3 million acres, fought tooth-and-nail for well over 150 years against an equally adamant and litigious minority Muslim-brethren … and for what, do you think?!

They fought bitterly and bloodily for a patch of land … for c. 2.2 acres of land in Ayodhya where both a temple and mosque, once upon a long time ago, seemed to have stood!

It’s pretty much the same sorry story of real-estate litigation too that we see with Arabs, Israelites and Christians fighting amongst themselves for centuries now in Jerusalem: over a small patch of land on a hill where the Dome of the Al Aqsa mosque, the Church of the Holy Sepulchre and the Wailing Wall all crowd together to share a tiny speck of geographical space on planet earth. There’s just doesn’t seem to be enough room for all the three gods of humanity on that blessed little hill…

This, it is not all really about Hate in the first place coming to think of it and coming to reflect upon human nature in general… The canker of Hate really starts spreading only much longer after Pride first starts spreading its poison.

Yes, I for one am fully convinced that it’s really some unknown perverse sense of Pride (which in their ancient philosophy of Vedanta, the Hindus called it “ahamkaara/mamakaara”); it seizes hold of the hearts of men and then it spreads like a virus and causes pandemic wave after wave of Hate, for generation after generations… Believe me, it is Pride indeed that causes Hate … it’s really not the other way round .

WHAT IS “VEDA ABHIMAANAM” AND WHY ?

www.facebook.com/sudarshan.madabushi.1/videos/176610183797930/

I’ve heard of Veda samrakshanam such as “anna daanam” to “Veda viths”, donating to Veda “paatshaalaas”, adopting Vedic village communities , teaching and learning Vedas and prostrating at the feet of a “Veda-goshti “ … But this is the first instance I’ve seen of “veda-abhimaana” being shown through “anga pradakshanam” of a group of “veda vidhyaartees “!

It is Wonderful to behold !

It suddenly opens my inner eye of awareness because now I ask myself as to why we should honour “ veda vidhyaartees” and “veda adhyapakars “ with such extreme and absolute acts of obeisance and reverence as we witness in this video-clip. It also makes me immediately imagine what perhaps great Kanchi periava might have had in mind when he is reported to have affirmed to Sri Ghattam Vinayaka Ram that such a mode of worship or “Veda Vandanam “ is worthy of anyone who regards himself as a devotee of Sanatana Dharma .

I ask myself above questions and I find my clear and powerful answers in the words of the Veda itself ! … in a passage from the Seekshavalli in the Taittireeya Upanishad where at a convocation or “graduate commencement ceremony” in a Vedic school , the “vidhyaartees “ listen in rapt attention to the parting exhortation in soul-stirring words of their Master .

Those words to my mind constitute the very essence , the veritable core of the whole spirit of sanatana dharma . So, I think when one does “anga pradakshanam” to a group of Vedic students and their Master , one virtually upholds and exalts the absolutely core values of Sanatana Dharma and one, by that act, swears eternal loyalty to it and abiding faith in it as a source of spiritual redemption in it !

What are those words? They are in fact only too well known and often quoted by everyone … but they are worth repeating here a 1000-times if only to underscore the great significance of even such a little act of “veda abhimaanam “ as shown in this video-clip which will bear a 1000-times repetition and more too:
