The video-clip is dated excerpt from a Tiruppaavai “upannyaasam” by Srimad Azhagiyasingar explicating at great length the beautiful Tamizh expression : “etra kalangal edhir pongi meedhalippa…” in one of the “paasurams” (stanzas) .
Apart from the profundity and narrative skill that anyone listening to him can appreciate in the Acharya’s discourse, I for one also loved the way how HH Azhagiyasingar in his upannyaasam, with a gentle, fleeting but humorous jab alludes to the historical tensions between Kanchipuram and Sri Rangam .
He wittily remarks: “The people on the banks of River Paalaar are gullible and guileless while those of River Cauvery are astute “saamartha-shaalins”!” That witty remark is made to leave us all wondering what’s in there in the Cauvery waters that makes the Sri Ranga “vaasis” more enterprising than the Kanchipururians !
Very deftly, he supports his assertion too with a brilliant rhetorical flourish:
“ After all, didn’t Sri Rangam hijack away Acharyas Ramanuja and Desika from Kanchipuram for good?!” asks Srimad Villivalam Azhagiyasingar… tongue-in-cheek… and I am willing to bet that no Sri Vaishnava can ever counter that sharp quip with an equal riposte!
